チャリティー・プロジェクト、
バンド・エイド。
これだけのメンバーを集めて、
1984年12月3日『Do They Know It’s Christmas』がリリースされた。
Do they Know it’s Christmas
リアルタイムでこのPVの映像を観た時は、
かなり驚いた記憶がある。
何せこれだけのアーティストが1984年11月25日に一堂に会して、
レコ―ディングしたんだからなかなかスゴイことだ。
発起人はボブ・ゲドルフ、
エチオピアでの1983年から1985年の飢饉に関するテレビ報道が始まりだ。
ミッジ・ユーロの奥さん、
アナベル・ジャイルズが手掛けていたテレビ番組にボブが出演した時のことだ。
電話でボブとミッジがこの報道の話題を話した時に、
このプロジェクトがスタートする。
ミッジがデモをつくり、
ボブが詞を添えた。

今夜は彼らみたいな境遇にいないことを感謝しよう
ボノが唄う部分は、
なかなか辛辣なフレーズだけれど本音が却って響く。
この部分は2014年のBand Aid 30では、
歌詞が差し換えられている（他も結構違うけど）。
こんな感じ。
Well tonight we’re reaching out and touching you

今夜その場所へ
温かい救いの手を差し伸べよう
そして、
多くのアイルランドとイギリスのアーティストが集まってこの曲は生まれた。
キャッチ―なメロディと相まって、
当然のようにこのレコードは売れる。
もちろんUKシングル・チャートで5週間1位にとどまり、
300万部以上を売り上げて当時英国で史上最も売れたシングルになった。
ちなみにそれまでは、
ウイングスの『Mull of Kintyre』が7年間記録を持っていたんだよね。
この曲の後は、
エルトン・ジョンが故ダイアナ妃に捧げた『Candle in the Wind 1997』が取って代わることになるんだけど。
やがてこのプロジェクトは、
あの『Live Aid』に繋がっていくことになる。
というわけで…
今回のクリスマス・ソングは、
1984年にリリースされた曲。
バンド・エイドの、
『Do they Know it’s Christmas』。
UKシングル・チャートで5週間1位にとどまり、
300万部以上を売り上げて当時英国で史上最も売れたシングルになった曲だ。
この曲はその後、
1989年/2004年/2014年の大々的なアニヴァーサリー時に新たなオール・スターによって繰り返しレコーディングされている。
