It doesn’t sound like him at all,
because it’s me singing and I don’t sound anything like Ray,
but sometimes you get a person in your mind,
just for an attitude,
just for a place to be,
so that your mind is somewhere rather than nowhere,
and you place it by thinking,
Oh, I love that Ray Charles, and think,
Well, what might he do then?
So that was in my mind,
and would have probably had some bearing on the chord structure of it,
which is slightly jazzy.
I think I could attribute that to having Ray in my mind when I wrote that one.

全然彼らしくないよ
歌っているのはボクだしレイには全く似ていないからね
でも時々ただ態度としてただ居場所として
ある人物を頭の中に思い浮かべることがあるんだ
そうすると心がどこでもないより
どこかにあるようになるんだ
ああレイ・チャールズが大好きだなと思って
彼だったらどうするだろう？と考えることで
その人物を頭の中に置くことができるんだ
だからそれが頭の中にあったし
少しジャズっぽいコード構成にも影響していたと思うと
この曲を書いた時にレイを頭の中に思い浮かべていたからだと思う

1969/1/26、
アップル・スタジオ。

この曲の吹き込みが、
スタート。

もちろんそれ以前に、
ポールはこの曲を何度も披露している。

1/30のルーフトップ・コンサート翌日の1/31日、
再びこの曲を吹き込む。

グリン・ジョーンズは、
1/26のテイクを選んで発売されなかった『Get Back』に収録。

この日のテイクは、
『The Beatles Anthology 3』に収録されている。

その後フィル・スペクターが再プロデュースしたものでこちらも1/26のテイクを採用、
アルバム『Let It Be』に収録される。

1/26と1/31のものでは、
歌詞が若干違う。

1/26のものが『Anyway, you’ve always known the many ways I’ve tried』、
1/31のものが『Anyway, you’ll never know the many ways I’ve tried』。

1/31のものは、
『Let It Be…Naked』で聴ける。

1971年のアルバム『Volcanic Action of My Soul』収録。

ポールが念頭に置いて書いたという、
チャールズのカヴァー。

当然、
合っている。

Aretha Franklin: The Long And Winding Road

アレサ・フランクリン、
1972年のアルバム『Young, Gifted And Black』。

彼女のビートルズ・カヴァーには、
外れがない。

これも、
本当に見事な出来栄え。

Nina Simone: The Long And Winding Road

ニーナ・シモン、
元々1992年の最後のスタジオ・アルバム『A Single Woman』2008年盤のボーナス・トラック。

まさに、
彼女の声がこの曲を唄っている。

Mina: The Long And Winding Road

ミーナ、
1993年のアルバム『Mina canta i Beatles』収録。

ここまでの3人と比較すると好み的には少し弱い感じがするけど、
それでも独特の存在感がある。
