このシングルは、
アップル・レコードの立ち上げ時に同時に発売された4枚のシングルのうちの1枚。

発売日に先立ち、
アップルは8/11/18日をイギリスの『National Apple Week』と宣言。

『Our First Four』と記されたギフト包装されたレコードを、
エリザベス女王と他の王室メンバーやハロルド・ウィルソン首相に送っている。

他の3枚のうちの1枚は、
メアリー・ホプキンスの『Those Were The Days』。

書いたのは、
ボリス・フォミンとジーン・ラスキン。

リチャード・ヒューソンが編曲、
ポールがプロデュースしている。

1959年にピート・シーガーが書いた『Turn! Turn! Turn!』をB面に、
A面でリリース。

I thought, as a friend of the family,
I would motor out to Weybridge and tell them that everything was all right:
to try and cheer them up, basically, and see how they were.
I had about an hour’s drive.
I would always turn the radio off and try and make up songs,
just in case… I started singing:
‘Hey Jules – don’t make it bad, take a sad song, and make it better…’
It was optimistic, a hopeful message for Julian:
‘Come on, man, your parents got divorced.
I know you’re not happy, but you’ll be OK.’

ウェイブリッジまで車で出かけて何も問題ないって伝えようと思ったんだ
基本的には彼らを励まして様子を見るつもりだった
車で約1時間
いつものようにラジオを消して歌を作ろうとしたんだ
そして歌い始めた
‘ねえジュールス悲しまないで
悲しい歌を歌ってもっと良いものにして…‘
それは楽観的でジュリアンへの希望に満ちたメッセージだったんだ
なあ君の両親は離婚したんだ
キミが幸せじゃないのは分かっているけど大丈夫だよってね

He said it was written about Julian, my child.
He knew I was splitting with Cyn and leaving Julian.
He was driving over to say hi to Julian.
He’d been like an uncle to him.
You know, Paul was always good with kids.
And so he came up with ‘Hey Jude’.
But I always heard it as a song to me.
If you think about it… Yoko’s just come into the picture.
He’s saying,
‘Hey, Jude – hey, John.’
I know I’m sounding like one of those fans who reads things into it,
but you can hear it as a song to me.
The words ‘go out and get her’
– subconsciously he was saying, Go ahead, leave me.
On a conscious level, he didn’t want me to go ahead.
The angel in him was saying, ‘Bless you.’
The devil in him didn’t like it at all because he didn’t want to lose his partner.

でもいつもボクへ歌として聞こえていたんだ
考えてみれば…ヨーコが登場したからね
彼は‘Hey, Jude – hey, John’ と言っているのさ
深読みするファンの一人みたに聞こえるのは分かっているけど
ボクへ歌として聞こえのさ
‘出て行って彼女を捕まえろ‘という言葉は
無意識のうちに彼は‘さあボクと別れろ‘と言っていたのさ
意識レベルでは彼は先に進んでほしくなかったんだな
彼の中の天使は‘お大事に‘と言っていて
彼の中の悪魔はパートナーを失いたくなかったから
それがまったく気に入らなかったんだ

I looked over my shoulder and I said,
‘I’ll change that, it’s a bit crummy.
I was just blocking it out,’
and John said, ‘You won’t, you know.
That’s the best line in it!’
That’s collaboration…

when I hear myself singing that line;
it’s an emotional point in the song.

そして‘The movement you need is on your shoulder’ という部分で、
肩越しに見て‘ここは変えよう ちょっとひどい ただぼかしていただけなんだ‘と言と
ジョンは「変えなでいい ここが一番いい部分なんだ！と言うんだ
それがコラボレーションだね…
この曲を歌っているとジョンのことを考えるんだ
この歌詞を自分が歌っているのを耳にしたとき聴くと
この曲の感情的なポイントになるんだ

Variation

1968/7/29のアビイ・ロード第2スタジオ、
ポールがピアノでジョンがアコギでジョージがエレキ・ギターでリンゴがドラムズで6テイク録音。

最後まで演奏できたのは、
第1・2・6テイク。

7/30、
テイク7から23まで吹き込む。

テイク23をリダクションして2425テイクを作成し、
25テイクを元にジョージ・マーティンがオーケストラのスコアを書くことに。

7/31、
8トラックのレコーディング設備を備えた独立系スタジオにトライデントへ移動。

これまでのテイクを全て破棄、
リメイクを開始してリズム・トラックを 4テイク吹き込む。

その最初のテイクをベストと判断、
8/1にポールのベースとヴォーカルとバック・コーラスをオーバー・ダブ。

夜には36名のオーケストラが招かれ、
オーケストラをオーバー・ダブ。

この時37人のオーケストラの36人が、
長い4和音のコーダのバック・コーラスを担当している。

Most of the musicians were happy to oblige,
especially as it meant a doubled fee,
but there was one dissenter who reportedly walked out,
saying “I’m not going to clap my hands and sing Paul McCartney’s bloody song!”

殆どのミュージシャンは
特に料金が2倍になるということで喜んで応じたが
反対者1人は “手を叩いてポールの歌をなんて歌うつもりはない！“と退場したと伝えられている

Clarence Wheelee, The Enforcers: Hey Jude

クラレンス・ウィーラー＆ザ・エンフォーサーズ、
1970年のアルバム『Doin’ What We Wanna』収録。

以前に『Glass Onion (Songs Of The Beatles From The Atlantic & Warner Jazz Vaults)』、
収録曲で出てきている。

やはりこのアレンジは良いし、
ソニー・バークのオルガンが気持ち良いのは変わらない。

Wilson Pickett: Hey Jude

ウィルソン・ピケット、
1969年のアルバム『Hey Jude』収録。

この曲でギターを義いているのは、
デュアン・オールマン。

Ella Fitzgerald: Hey Jude

エラ・フィッツジェラルド、
1969年のライヴ・アルバム『Sunshine of Your Love』収録。

やはりこの人は唄うと、
別物になる。
